ACT Party Board Member and 2020 Candidate for Waikato
Dr James McDowall spearheaded ACT’s 2019–2020 firearms policy development following the Party’s opposition to the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines, and Parts) Amendment Act 2019. This work continues and James is encouraged by the number of new members and supporters from the firearms community.
James first joined ACT in 2006. At that time, his politics were largely conservative, however after many discussions on liberty and personal responsibility with Rodney Hide, James now describes himself as a libertarian. James stood for ACT in the Hamilton East electorate in the 2017 general election, and became a regional board member in 2019.
James owns several small businesses, including an immigration law firm. He also works for a large NGO in the mental health sector. James lives in Hamilton with his wife and young daughter.
